The Origins of Father’s Day in the UK

Believe it or not, the concept of Father’s Day isn’t just an excuse for dads to put their feet up and breakfast in bed (though that’s definitely a perk). The history of Father’s Day dates to the early 20th century in the United States, where it all began. The first Father’s Day service took place on July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia, organised by Grace Golden Clayton. She wanted to honour the fathers who had tragically died in a mining accident.

However, the real champion of Father’s Day was Sonora Smart Dodd. Inspired by Mother’s Day, she sought to honour her father, William Jackson Smart, a single dad who raised six kids. Thanks to her efforts, the first state-wide Father’s Day was celebrated in Washington in 1910. It wasn’t until 1972 that Father’s Day became an official holiday in the US.

The UK, never one to miss out on a good celebration also followed suit around the same time, and we now celebrate Father’s Day annually on the third Sunday of June,
